The Better Work Network is a policy and practice-based initiative, hosted by Learning and Work Institute and Trust for London, dedicated to tackling the issues of low pay and poor quality of work within London and across the wider United Kingdom. The network brings together a range of stakeholders and influencers, including central and local government, think-tanks, charities, employers, funders and organisations involved in the delivery of support.

Through an innovative programme of research and development, our aim is to build upon the growing number of existing initiatives which support good work and in-work progression by testing what works, promoting best practice and providing a coordinating role to support stakeholders to bring real and long-lasting change and improve earnings and work quality.

What we do

Research and Development

Our skilled research team conduct targeted research and analysis to test ideas, identify what works and support and develop new approaches; maximising the impact of initiatives to improve earnings and work quality.

Collaboration and evidence sharing

We share best practice and new thinking through a range of accessible outputs, resources and events; supporting innovation and learning between network members and wider stakeholders.

Networking and influencing

The network influences policy and practice through the co-ordination and planning of influencing activities with a range of organisations engaged in policy, research, influencing or delivery around the Better Work Agenda.

The Better Work Map

This map has been created by the Better Work Network to locate progression-focused initiatives that are or have been in operation across the UK.

EAAL: Low pay and the development of progression-focused pathways

L&W have led a strand of work to focus on low pay and the development of progression-focused pathways as part of the European Agenda for Adult Learning.

The Step Up Pilot: Year Three

The final report builds on the year two evaluation and provides further analysis of monitoring information, an impact assessment and cost benefit analysis, as well as longitudinal research with Step Up participants to assess the pilot’s performance across its lifetime.

Evaluation of ESF In-Work Progression Programme

This report presents findings from the evaluation of the ESF In-Work Progression Programme, which aimed to support low paid workers to progress into better paid, more stable work through the provision of a tailored package of support.

Better Work Conference - highlights

Marking one year since the launch of the Better Work Network by Learning and Work Institute and Trust for London, the inaugural Better Work Conference brought together over 80 delegates from a wide range of stakeholders working to tackle low paid and poor-quality work. The conference provided a valuable opportunity to hear about some of the innovative projects being carried out by network members and to share best practice in the commissioning, design and delivery of initiatives to promote better work.

The sobering reality and growing significance of low-paid and insecure work

Since our launch, the Better Work Network has grown rapidly to include over 260 members. The high levels of interest in our work reflect the sobering reality of the growing significance of the issues of low pay and insecure, poor quality work.

Mission Impossible: tackling the causes and consequences of in-work poverty

The government and other stakeholders must utilise all tools available to them in order to effectively tackle the causes and consequences of in-work poverty.
