Can you offer new ways to engage, train and support individuals to help them progress into or through work? Ambition London is calling for expressions of interest for delivery partners who would be interested in trialling new approaches.

Ambition London is Learning and Work Institute’s flagship programme supporting employers and individuals to meet their skills needs, making use of Advanced Learner Loans to support their learning. Funded by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, the project aims to build better opportunities for Londoners to build their careers and employers to meet their skills needs.

London is a global success story. However, many people are unable to share in the city’s prosperity: one in five employed Londoners is paid below the London living wage. Advanced Learner Loans are available to support the cost of study that might help people to progress from low pay. But take-up to date has been disappointing. This has potential long-term consequences: limiting people’s chances to progress and constraining the competitiveness of London’s employers.

Ambition London will try new ways to tackle these challenges. It will develop partnerships with intermediaries, employers and learners to develop new ways of engaging and supporting the workforce. The ultimate aim is to ensure London’s employers can meet their skills needs and Londoners have access to learning that will boost their careers. Making learning work.

Ambition London focuses on two key sectors which are crucial to London’s economy and individuals’ prospects; it will focus on retail in central London – where the largest concentration of retail employment is to be found and where we aim to build on work with existing partnerships of Boroughs and employers and, health and social care in east London – an area of London with strong population growth and a range of different employers in the sector.

Taken together, this gives coverage across sectors that collectively employ more than one million Londoners, a figure projected to grow. Each faces distinct challenges, whether how best to support private sector growth, or how to deliver public sector reform, and for each learning and skills will be crucial.
